Hey friends!! Let’s talk getting ready details on your wedding day!! Y’all know that I do wedding photography in Columbus, as well as surrounding areas of Ohio. And you may know that I like to capture the bride as she is getting ready for the wedding. What you may not realize is that I like to capture the groom too when he is getting ready.
It helps tell the full story of the day, don’t you think? Seeing the groom’s details like his tie, cuff links, and socks. And then getting to see what his whole day is like before the wedding ceremony. Hanging out with his friends. Maybe tossing back a beer or two. These moments are just as important as the bride’s moments that day. And I love getting to share them!
I tell all my couples that I want to be a part of the getting ready process for the bride and the groom. The bride usually understands that and it isn’t a problem to get her and her wedding party to slow down and make sure I’m a part of their day, but guys are a different story. On many occasions I arrive and have to make the groom undress!!! Thankfully they are good sports and follow my lead. But on a really good day, I show up and they are just hanging out, waiting for me to arrive and start directing them. AAaaaahhhhh. I big puffy heart days like that!
I ask for their details first. Shoes. Socks. Tie. Rings. Watch. Cufflinks. Whatever they have that might be special to them. If the groomsmen aren’t dressed, I ask them to start getting dressed while I capture the groom’s details. Usually by the time I’m finished with the details, the men are dressed enough for me to capture their finishing touches before the best man or father of the groom helps get the groom dressed.
And voila! He’s dressed!
This is where one of my favorite funny moments starts. I have 2 when it comes to the men getting ready. The first is when they have to YouTube how to do something. Often it has something to do with those colorful pocket squares or handkerchiefs. No one is ever entirely certain how they should fold them. Flat and square or a poof? Here’s some help: http://www.ctshirts.com/us/how-to-fold-a-pocket-square/ if you want to read how to do it and YouTube if you want to watch. You’re welcome 😉
Ha! Ok, so we’ve sorted that. Now I’m able to capture the groom when he gets a gift from his future wife. Sometimes a groom is too self-conscious to really feel that moment, but sometimes he shows how excited he is and how much he loves her. Either way, I’m happy to save this moment for both of them.
Oh and that second funny moment that I love….These handsome guys didn’t have that moment until they reached the church, but it has something to do with boutonnières. 🙂
