Congratulations!! I’m so excited for you and your partner! Being engaged is such an exciting time!! I am Julie and I’m an Ohio engagement photographer, well a wedding photographer, but I take engagement photos too 🙂 My goal of 2017 is to be more active on my blog and to write helpful posts for brides and grooms! So, welcome, and I hope you find this info helpful!
As you start to contact wedding photographers, you are likely to be asked about scheduling an engagement session. You or your partner is wondering what the fuss about an engagement session is, right? Well, read on and hopefully I will answer your questions! And if not, use that contact link and ask me!!!
What is an engagement session?
An engagement session, or a an e-session as you might see it on social media, is a portrait session of you and your partner. Some couples like to use the engagement session to fulfill a specific needs. Sometimes those needs are for a special display at the wedding reception, to use on the wedding website, or for Save the Date cards. It is also just an amazing chance to have professional photographs taken of you and your partner together during this happy time. The engagement time you and your partner share is a sweet time in your relationship and it is great to commemorate that with pictures of your together.
Want another reason? It’s a perfect time to get to know your photographer and for your photographer to get to know you! The better you know your photographer and the more they know you, then the easier your sessions in front of the camera can flow. Spending time in front of the camera isn’t easy, at least for me, but I know that getting my couples comfortable means photos that are amazing. You can tell when a couple feels relaxed and is truly focused on one another.
How does an engagement shoot work?
This is how it works with me 🙂 First up is choosing a location together. Then we will set a time for your session. On the day of your session, we will meet and get started. We will walk and stop here and there to shoot. We will chat as I am looking for the best light, great backgrounds, and unique photo opportunities. I will guide you to certain poses or ways to interact. Remember this session is all about you as a couple, so my goal is to get photos of you as you normally interact. I want to have you both feel comfortable and will do my best to not put you in a position that doesn’t feel natural.
Ok, so maybe you’re wondering what I mean by guiding you to an interaction. Right? I will give you a prompt, like walking down a country road with empty corn fields on either side. I will tell you to chat with one another as you slowly walk towards me and try to forget that I’m there. This gives natural interactions. He tells a joke, she laughs. It’s sweet and natural which is what I’m going for!
Another example: I might have you stand close together and simply say to hold one another and then I tell the groom to whisper something like when he knew he wanted to spend forever with you into your ear. I’m watching for you to put your arms around each other and then I am waiting to see that emotional reaction from sharing such a sweet moment. I want to see the natural flow of your chemistry and how you get close to one another. I do this because I want your engagement photos to be real moments that I am honored to be there to capture. Sure, I worked with you to set up a location and time and I gave prompts, but it is your natural flow as a couple that comes through. It is your emotions and interactions that make your portraits amazing!
